فمعظم الناس يعتقدون أن قائمة "الخطايا السبع " هي:"الكبرياء، الحسد، الجشع، الشهوة، الغضب، الطمع، والكسل". وبالرغم من أن كل من هذه الصفات بلا شك يمثل خطايا، ولكن لا يوجد أي شيء في الكتاب المقدس يشير الي أن هذه الخطايا هي "الخطايا السبع المميتة". والقائمة التقليدية المتوافرة "للخطايا السبع المميتة" تساعدنا علي تقسيم الخطايا الي أقسام مختلفة. فكل خطيئة موجودة يمكن أن تقع تحت قسم معين. ولكن من المهم ادراك أن السبع خطايا ليسوا أكثر خطورة عن أي خطايا أخري. فأجرة أي خطيئة هي الموت (رومية 23:6). ولكن مجداً لله، أذ أن كل خطايانا يمكن أن تغفر من خلال الأيمان بأبنه يسوع المسيح، وأن كانت واحدة من السبع خطايا (متي 28:26 و أعمال الرسل 43:10 وأفسس 7:1)
